BC Chapter President’s Annual Report
April 22, 2009

Good evening fellow members and most welcomed guests.  On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to welcome you to the BC Chapter’s Annual General Meeting.

It has been a great honour for me to serve as President of the BC Chapter.  This year has been particularly demanding for me as I’ve juggled to meet the deadlines from work, school and unforeseeable life events.  To quote from David White’s “Crossing the Unknown Sea” “A good crew doesn’t let a new captain fail: and in this vein I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the board of directors who have accomplished so much in this past year.  It has been a privilege to serve on the board with all of you.

Amber Ellwyn, CCP – Vice President, Secretary and Privacy Officer
Stacey Pickett, CCP – Treasury and Student Education Coordinator & Awards
David Lundrigan, CCP – Seminars Chair
Jim Jordan, CCP – Past President Publicity/Promotion and Legislation & By Laws
Heather Strack, CCP – West Coast Credit Line and National Director
Leanne Jensen, CCP – Chapter Referral Chair
          Margaret Watson – Student Representative

We must also acknowledge the support the Chapter has received from the employers of these individuals who have on occasion taken time away from work to attend Institute matters and also the resources these employers have provided towards the Chapter’s activities and administration.  The firms we wish to thank are General Paint Corp; Vannet Newspapers, a division of Canwest Publishing Inc; Western Forest Products Inc; Catalyst Paper Corp; Davis LLp; and Garibaldi Glass Industries Inc.

I would also like to introduce two new volunteers who have recently joined the board – Jocelyn Rocheleau, CCP – Amec Earth & Environmental and Melody Briolett, CCP – Proveer Signs & Graphics.

A special warm welcome to some of the VIP that have come out to be with us tonight: Amber Ellwyn, CCP; Jim Jordan, CCP; Pam Burton, CCP; and Irene Joy, CCP.  Both Pam Burton and Irene Joy are recipients of the Vi Jones Memorial Award.

We are very grateful to Irene Joy in her continuing role as chaplain and for her many years of service and support to the credit profession, the Chapter and the community.  I would also like to thank all of the other VIP’s who are not present with us for their ongoing contributions to the BC Chapter.

A special thanks to Bruce Hurst, CCP our auditor from Reid, Hurst & Nagy for his ongoing commitment to the BC Chapter.  After Bruce obtained his CCP he carried on to further his education and obtain his CA.  He has dedicated many years to his profession, contributions to the credit profession and to his community.  We are sorry he could not be here with us this evening.

Our annual golf tournament was held on September 10 at the Country Meadows Golf Club with 61 registrants.  The beautiful weather made this day all the more enjoyable and great prizes were offered through the generosity of our sponsors.  Our gratitude to the following companies for their sponsorship and donations:  Equifax Canada Inc; D & B Canada; TransUnion of Canada Inc; CBV Collection Services; Metropolitan Credit Adjusters Ltd; Corix Water Products and Country Meadows Golf & Country.  We would also like to thank Nancy Goldman for co-ordinating this event.

On November 21, 2008 we welcomed three new graduates at our Graduation & Awards ceremonies – Stella K.M. Chan, CCP; Maria (Nancy) Indita-Jones, CCP; and Christopher Saruya, CCP. Patrick Jakubowski was the recipient of a National award for the highest marks in Law.  The BC Achievement awards went to Patrick Jakubowski for the highest marks in Law & Communications, Denise Blades for the 2nd highest combined marks in Credit Management & Financial Accounting & Ella S.Y. Tsang for the 3rd highest combined marks in Credit Management & Advanced Credit Management.  Local awards went to Michelle Hendriks, Patrick Jakubowski, Maria (Nancy) Indita-Jones, Denise Blades, Amy Kilmer and Joseph Lozinski.

We thank our sponsors:  Equifax Canada Inc., D & B Canada, Trans Union of Canada Inc; Metropolitan Credit Adjusters Ltd; HSBC Bank of Canada, Canadian Credit Career Group of Vancouver, West Fraser Mills Ltd; Western Forum of Credit & Financial Executives Association and VCR Print.

Our valedictorian was Maria (Nancy)Indita-Jones who delivered a heartfelt speech of her experience as she unceasingly worked towards achieving her development goal.  During the course of the evening, we also has a cake cutting ceremony in recognition of the 80th anniversary of the inception of the Credit Institute of Canada.  This year’s Vi Jones Memorial recipient was Carl Larsen, CCP Emeritus who unfortunately was unable to attend.  We thank Stacey Pickett for hosting the evening and coordinating the awards program and those in our Graduation committee that made this evening a success.  There were 58 in attendance that night.  The awards program is another way we support our student members.  We also offer a mentorship program and a student discussion link on the national web site.  We were also notified that on September 8, 2009 – Simon Fraser University had listed the CCP program on their web site and in their course calendar.

Our seminar committee – chaired by David Lundrigan and assisted by Amber Ellwyn and Heather Strack presented 2 seminars this year.  “Entering the Export Market – Be Prepared” and “Builders Lien Act & Collection of Accounts Receivable”.  We are grateful to David Lundrigan and the seminar committee for their efforts to provide educational events supporting our students, our members and the needs of the business community.

On Friday, March 13th we held a night at the races at Fraser Downs Race Course with 28 in attendance including 2 students.  Some were luckier than others but a good time was had by all.  We extend many thanks to Pam Burton for her assistance in organizing this event.

Jim Jordan, Chair of the Publicity and Promotions committee continued his ongoing efforts to increase awareness of the Credit Institute of Canada through the local BC Chapter.  This year we again took out a full page advertisement in the Business in Vancouver publication of the “Right Course”.  We incorporated the branding designs which the National Marketing Committee created in our two banners which generated much interest at the Career Fair in March.  Of those that visited our booth 107 people entered a draw to win a Credit Basic Course gratuity courtesy of the National office.  We would like to thank National for their support in our local marketing efforts and the assistance they provided with our banners.  Our BC Chapter membership has now reached 200 members and at last count 33 students.

As much as were pleased to hear of the career opportunity that took our WCCL editor out of the country we were disappointed to see Terence Lao go.  His sudden departure in July disrupted the publishing of our quarterly newsletter.  Heather has taken on this tasking portfolio with determination and managed to publish the editions.  Compensation will be offered to the advertiser for the ads that were missed during the 2008/09 fiscal year.

Most of the CCP designations were either picked up or delivered and distributed at our Grad night.  There are a few remaining and we urge those who haven’t received theirs to please make arrangements with the Chapter office to receive them.  We’ve been informed by the National Chair of Governance and ByLaws Committee the Chapter By Laws have been updated to reflect the change in the name of the designation in those sections referencing FCI to CCP as well as FCI (Emeritus) to CCP (Emeritus).  This change to our designation as you may recall was already voted on and approved nationally in June 2007.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Heather Strack for the 6 years of dedication she has given as the National Director of the BC Chapter.

Thank you again for it has been a privilege to serve as the Chapter President and I encourage you to get involved in your Chapter.  The success of your chapter depends on the commitment of its volunteers.

Respectfully submitted
Muguette MacDonald, CCP

Vi Jones Memorial Award
The Vi Jones Memorial is presented this evening to an individual that has provided many years of service and support to the B.C. Chapter of the Credit Institute as well as having a strong commitment as a volunteer in their community. This individual has always supported the educational and social programs of the B.C. Chapter and can be counted on time and time again to assist whenever there is a need. The award being presented tonight represents and acknowledges their strong commitment and honors the memory of Violet Jones and her devotion to the credit fraternity. Her generosity and dedication to everyone she met, her encouragement when all else seemed unattainable and the friendship she bestowed on her fellow man is honored here tonight. Violet was a very spiritual woman who recognized the good in an individual and encouraged them to take advantage of every opportunity. This award celebrates the life of Violet Jones and her memory. Tonight this prestigious award is given to an individual that shares the same goals and has walked the distance in support of this chapter.

Celebrating 80 Years of Professional Credit Education
2008 marks the eightieth anniversary of the Credit Institute of Canada (CIC). Created by a special Act of Parliament in 1928, the CIC is the only Canadian organization which grants official designations to professionals in the Canadian credit field, and is recognized as the primary source of credit management training in the country.

The Credit Institute of Canada (CIC) professional training benefits both professional members of the organization and the businesses they serve. Carol Breining is one such individual. Carol became a member of the CIC British Columbia branch at the beginning of her career as a credit professional in the international forestry industry, and earned the CCP (Certified Credit Professional) designation shortly thereafter. She is former CIC National President and Dean, was an active member of the National Board of Directors, and has been awarded the prestigious CCP (Emeritus) designation.

Throughout her nearly 30 year career, Ms. Breining distinguished herself as a leader in the credit industry.

“To be a successful credit manager you must have all the tools to do so,” Ms. Breining states. “I started as the secretary to the Corporate Credit Manager. After completing the CIC program I was promoted to Credit Manager handling a very large accounts receivable portfolio. Without the formal educational component, that would not have been possible.”

Ms. Breining notes that the volatility of the financial marketplace makes it prudent for employers to ensure that they have a knowledgeable individual handling the credit portion of the business.

“Most companies operate with a line of credit from a financial institution as well as third-party accounts receivable insurance. These institutions require that the credit personnel handling the accounts receivable portfolio have either a Finance Degree or the CCP designation. A professional that has a designation and continues to maintain it by completing the continuous educational components is far better prepared to deal with the legal issues associated with credit management. I would definitely recommend credit professionals firm up their credentials.”

The CCP designation is widely acknowledged in today’s global marketplace as a symbol of excellence in credit management. The Certified Credit Professional designation (CCP) is a rigorous and reputable benchmark of excellence that enables businesses to clearly and confidently identify individuals of outstanding training and capabilities.
