Introducing Bill Schmidt, CCP (Emeritus), 2nd Vice President
Credit Institute of Canada

In our continuing series on CIC volunteers, I’m pleased to have the opportunity to introduce Bill Schmidt – credit professional, committed volunteer, and family man.

Bill Schmidt has been a long term member of the CIC. He received his designation (then MCI), in 1970, and was awarded the CCP (Emeritus) in 2000. Throughout his career Bill has been a very active credit community volunteer: President of the Calgary Chapter from 1970-72; Chair of the Western Forum of Credit and Financial Executives from 1978-79; and Board member of the Canadian Credit Institute Educational Foundation from 2000-06. Bill currently serves as the National Board member for the Calgary Chapter, and at the June 2009 Board meeting was elected to the Institute’s Executive committee, as 2nd Vice President.

Bill’s record in the world of work is also of interest. Throughout his 45+ years in the work force, Bill had only one employer- Lafarge Canada. Lafarge Canada provided Bill with excellent opportunities for education and varied work in credit and administration, as well as the chance to live and travel to different parts of Canada and the US. Bill has fond memories of his time with Lafarge and all the company personnel in Canada and the US he interacted with. Customers remember how Bill was able to help them in times of need, while Bill says that a career highlight was his record in progressively reducing DSO’s and write-offs while helping manage accounts receivable worth millions of dollars annually.

Although now retired, Bill keeps busy with his CIC volunteer work as well as other community commitments, including being a blood donor. To date, he has donated 156 pints of whole blood to the Canadian Blood Services. Bill also makes time for friends and family—wife Rosalyn, 3 children, and 3 grandchildren. And we mustn’t forget the time out for ice cream, cherries, and chocolates!
